Almshouses

Bristol Charities owns or manages almshouses across Bristol, offering approximately 167 older people the opportunity to lead independent lives in a safe and supported environment.
However, these old buildings - while architecturally important and impressive landmarks throughout the City - are not compatible with the needs of older people today. Issues such as wheelchair access and user-friendly fittings cannot really be incorporated in these historic structures.

What is almshouse accommodation?
Almshouses offer individuals in need the opportunity to lead independent lives in a safe and supported environment.

Who can apply for almshouse accommodation?
The accommodation is for individuals over 55 years old who are in need and who have been resident in Bristol for a minimum of 2 years.

What type of accommodation is it?
All of the almshouses contain unfurnished 1 bedroom flats, with separate kitchen, lounge and bathroom and own front door. Each flat is carpeted through out and the kitchen contains a cooker and fridge.

Each almshouse has a communal laundry area and community room.

Would I be a tenant?
No, you would be a resident under a 'licence to occupy' agreement.

What support services would I receive?
All the almshouses have either a resident or visiting warden. In addition all the flats are connected to a control centre for emergencies. The Charity maintains the gardens for the use of the residents, and carries out all maintenance work.

What bills would I have to pay?
If you are eligible for full housing benefit & supporting people benefit your weekly maintenance charge will be covered by the City Council. You would then pay the Charity a weekly heating & light charge.

You would be responsible for the payment of council tax (unless exempt), TV licence (unless you are over 60) and telephone bill.

Where are the almshouses managed by Bristol Charities located?

  • Perrett House, Red Cross Street
  • Red Cross Mews, Red Cross Street
  • John Foster's Almshouse, Henbury
