School’s continued support for the Henbury Centre

Pupils from Clifton College Preparatory School handed over a cheque for £570 to David Jones, Chief Executive, Bristol Charities at an official presentation ceremony this week.

Over 400 children and teachers helped to raise the impressive sum by organising their own Homes Clothes Day.   Everyone taking part was given the chance to wear their own clothes to school in exchange for making a minimum donation of £1 towards the fundraising appeal.

The money will help to fund two places at the Henbury Centre, which provides day care services for older people in Bristol.   Clifton College is a long time supporter of the Henbury Centre and helped to raise money for its £200,000 revamp, which was completed in June this year.

Bob Acheson, Head Teacher at Clifton College Preparatory School, said: “This money is vital to help Bristol’s older people enjoy the real benefits that this Centre conveys”.

“Sadly, older people are not treated well in this country.  They deserve our respect, gratitude and support and at Clifton, children recognise that they have responsibility to provide this and will continue to do what they can to support this excellent facility.  I am very proud of their achievements in this respect,” he said.

The Henbury Centre was opened by Bristol Charities in January 2005 and caters for up to 35 people, five days a week.  It is the first of a network of similar services which Bristol Charities hope to develop across the city.

David Jones, Chief Executive of Bristol Charities, said: “We are delighted that the pupils and staff at Clifton College Preparatory School are continuing to support the Henbury Centre, in providing support for older people. This purpose built Centre helps to maintain a person’s independence and quality of life, alleviating social isolation, allowing a person to live in his or her own home for as long as possible”.
