Doors Open Day 2011As part of ‘Doors Open Day’, David Jones, Chief Executive of Bristol Charities, and Irene Cooper, manager of care services, dressed as John and Elizabeth Foster and hundreds of people took the opportunity of visiting the Chapel of the Three Kings at the top of Christmas Steps. Originally founded in 1485, David Jones explained how the Victorian almshouse in Colston Street had been sold in 2007 and that the new John Foster’s Almshouse in Henbury had opened in 2009, providing twenty-first century accommodation for older people. Visitors to the Chapel were able to hear about the role of almshouses, in the past and today, and how this almshouse charity was still providing for Bristolians over 500 years after it was formed
